Building 2, Huaihai Apartment at No.1204~1218 Middle Huaihai Road was built in 1935. It was designed by the French architect’s office Leonard, Veysseyre & Kruze, invested by International Savings Society and built by Sino-French Construction Factory. It is of the Art Deco style.
The apartment is divided into two rows. The front row is Building 2, a five-floor apartment building with a building area of 3,318 sq m. The apartment is of the Art Deco style, but it emphasizes the composition of horizontal and vertical lines in a simple manner, with a clear tendency of modernism. Of Building 2, the first floor is for commercial rental, and other floors are used by residents, with two rooms per suite, six suites per floor and a total of 24 suites.
The apartment was one of the most representative works of Leonard, Veysseyre & Kruze.
Zhou Gucheng and other celebrities once lived here. The Swiss and Indonesian consulates in Shanghai once settled here as well.
On September 23, 1999, Building 2 was announced by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government as a Heritage Architecture in Shanghai (under Class III Protection).
