Address:No.178 South Urumqi Road
  • Building 2 at No.178 South Urumqi Road, built in 1932, is an English-style garden residence.

The building has a fake-three-floor half-timbered structure and a high-pitched red-tile roof, with shed-type dormers on both the north and south sides, and large chimneys on the west and north sides. Inside the building, there is a continuous arch walkway which is very beautiful. To the south of the main building is a huge garden.

Xia Yan lived here from 1949 to 1956. He was China’s famous literature, movie and drama writer, literature and art critic, literary artist, translator and social activist, as well as one of the pioneers of China’s New Culture Movement. He served as Deputy Minister of Culture, Vice Chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Member of the Standing Committee of the 5th CPPCC National Committee, etc.

After the reform and opening up, Xuhui District Committee of the CPPCC had long been here. Now the building is being renovated, and Xuhui District People’s Government plans to establish the Former Residence of Xia Yan here.

On April 4, 2014, the site was announced by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government as a Historical and Cultural Heritage Protected at the Municipal Level.
