This neighborhood residence has a three-storey brick-concrete structure and simple facades. The couple of Cao Tianqin and Xie Xide lived here between 1952 and 1986.Cao Tianqin (1920~1995), born in Shulu, Hebei, is an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, biologist, and the founder of modern protein researches in China. Cao dedicated his life to the molecular biological research of proteins and plant viruses, and made significant research achievements in the fields of muscle protein, neuroprotein, proteolytic enzymes and inhibitors, muscle preservation for ancient corpses of Mawangdui Han Tombs, plant viruses, mycoplasma-like organisms, and ancient Chinese science and technology history; among those achievements, the discovery of myosin light chains was recognized by international peers and was recorded in history. He is also one of the key organizers for artificially synthesized bovine insulin in China.Xie Xide (1921~2000), born in Quanzhou, Fujian, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, physicist, and educator, once served as the president of Fudan University. Xie was mainly dedicated to the theoretical research of semiconductor physics and surface physics. She is one of the key pioneers and organizers in those two fields in China.It is now a civilian residence. On December 31, 2015, it was designated as a Cultural Relic Protection Site in Xuhui District by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Xuhui District, Shanghai.
